Announcing the AAWCC Scholarship Awardees for
2008-2009
NILD Scholarship
Dr. Deborah G. Wright, Region III
Doctoral Scholarships (2009-10)
The American Association for Women in Community Colleges and the American Council on Education’s Office of Women in Higher Education are proud to announce the recipients of their first annual doctoral program scholarships.
AAWCC and OWHE introduced this initiative in an ongoing effort to champion women and maximize their potential. Following a competitive selection process, two recipients were chosen and will each receive a $3,000 scholarship for their doctoral studies. The scholarships will be presented at the AAWCC annual awards breakfast on April 6 in Phoenix, AZ.

Ms. Rachel Frick Cardelle
Northhampton Community College
Pennsylvania
Rachel Frick Cardelle is a grants specialist at Northampton Community College in Bethlehem, PA. Ms. Cardelle plans to pursue a doctorate with a focus on studying persistence and retention programs for first-generation, female, and minority community college students.
In addition to raising a young family, Ms. Cardelle is president of the Stroudsburg Area School District Board and is involved in numerous campus and community activities. Gender issues have also been part of Ms. Cardelle’s intellectual and professional pursuits as evidenced by her efforts to train indigenous female health promoters in Central America.
References say Ms. Cardelle is a “rising star” and commend her for her passion, leadership, and commitment to excellence. Her goal is to hold the position of dean or vice president at Northampton Community College where she hopes to encourage leadership in others.

Ms. Marjorie Cook
Wisconsin
Marjorie Cook is an administrative assistant at Madison Area Technical College in Wisconsin. She is currently enrolled as a doctoral student in educational leadership and policy analysis at the University of Wisconsin.
In her application, Ms. Cook recounts her inspirational journey from GED to Ph.D. While overcoming enormous personal hardships, she never lost sight of her goal of assisting students in reaching their educational, career, and life goals by addressing issues related to self-esteem and a sense of belonging. Her philosophy and approach to serving students is based on the belief that every person can transform their life, and community colleges are best situated to help them reach their goals.
Ms. Cook promises to “continue to use my story and my research on student achievement to illuminate the importance of community colleges in the lives of individuals and communities.”
AAWCC and OWHE congratulate Ms. Cardelle and Ms. Cook on receiving this well-deserved award.
