Champion of the Month

Dr. Susan Salvador

It is our pleasure to name Dr. Susan Salvador, Vice President for Student Services at Monroe Community College as the Champion of the Month for Region II.  Susan was a founding member of the AAWCC chapter at Monroe Community College (MCC).  She served as Vice President of this chapter from 1993-1995, and as President from 1995-1997.  In 1994, Susan was instrumental in establishing the Take Our Daughters (and Sons) to Work Day event at MCC.

The Monroe AAWC Chapter provides women across the College the opportunity to connect to one another, to grow and learn in the area of women’s current events and issues.  Susan remains actively involved with the chapter, annually hosting a networking reception at her home for members and guests.  Susan is an insightful and passionate speaker and has made a conscious effort to share her expertise with women at two-year colleges.

Susan's record of service to women in two-year colleges is exceptional.  She is a highly regarded expert on a variety of topics both regionally and nationally. Susan is a board member of the League for Innovation in the Community College.  The League provides direction and leadership for experimentation and innovation in two-year colleges and its members are recognized as the best community colleges in the United States and Canada. Susan has served as the college’s representative to the League since 2001.  As such, she directly impacts community college and women’s issues on the national level and she readily interprets and shares this information with her colleagues. Susan often is asked to consult or to speak in the areas of student services, academic advisement, women’s leadership, classroom civility, self-management and assessment.  An accomplished professional, Susan has participated and contributed on national committees and professional associations such as the Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA), the American College Personnel Association (ACPA) and the League for Innovation in the Community College.

Susan is an inspiration, an advocate and a highly respected resource for women at MCC and beyond. She has been the driving force in the development of numerous innovative programs to assist students.  Susan has mentored over twenty women at the College as well as women in the Institute for Community College Development Leadership Program.  She focuses on encouraging women to move outside of their current roles and assume additional leadership opportunities.

Susan enjoys supporting women to take a risk … to try something new or to be open to discuss challenges so new approaches can be designed.  As a Vice President, Susan individually and collaboratively has supported new programs and projects MCC women participate in to develop their leadership skills. Susan encourages innovation and continually challenges those with whom she works with to be the best that they can be.
